What do you think of when you hear the word Australia?
Strange animals, warm people, nice weather, surf and sea? Well you are part right. Warm people? Absolutely!
Strange Animals? Absolutely! There is no place else in the world that has the kangaroo, wombat, platypus, wallaby and other marsupials.
Australia has a variety of climates so if it is snow skiing, surfing, hiking, diving, or just relaxing you can do it all in the Land of Oz.
As far as strange animals are concerned let me tell you about an adventure I had with Echidna Walkabout. I was fortunate to travel with them in late May. We made our way out of Melbourne and into the outback to visit the wild koalas, and other creatures in their native surroundings. We spotted wild koalas in the trees and learned about their territories and habits while being accompanied by a naturalist named Mary. We hiked through their woods in search of sleeping koalas. Mary told us about their habits and personalities. Yes each on is different just like us. Roger took us an aboriginal site of the Wathaurong to explore and learn a bit of their customs. We also had a fabulous lunch and drank Billy tea and chatted about our lives and those of our guide. Then it was on to find and “stalk” the emu and gray kangaroo in their natural environment. Great fun and exciting to see the mob as it is in the wild with small, medium and large family members. There was one Momma Kangaroo teaching her Joey what it was like to eat grass. He was in the pouch, at least most of him was, but his head and front feet were balanced in the grass eating away.
The Owner/Operators of Echidna Walkabout are Janine Duffy and Roger Smith and are based in Melbourne, Victoria. They both have a strong respect for the environment, the indigenous cultures and interest in environmentally sustainable living. Their personal expertise in the wild of this wonderful country will keep anyone fascinated for hours. They both are passionate and respectful of this land and the animals and people who live there.
